About Us
Ape Lamai (Our Kids /අපේ ළමයි) is a not-for-profit organization for children with disabilities and learning difficulties. Founded in 1999 by Mr. Thilakarathna for his son Vishva Krishan when he was diagnosed with hydrocephalus (ජලකපාලතාවය). Ape Lamai provides schooling, vocational training, and board for over 60 students aged 3 to 24.
Education is one of the most important tools for success in life to grow and to move out into the world. At Ape Lamai, we provide education and services free of charge, promoting development and inclusion to enrich the lives of children with special needs.
The Ape Lamai organisation is based at an abandoned school near the Botale railway station that has been repurposed for the organisation. The organisation receives little government funding (wages for 4 teachers, textbooks and 1 uniform per student per year) so it relies on the generosity of donors. Get involved today by volunteering, sponsoring a child, or donating to keep Ape Lamai running.
