We aim to help children and young people with disabilities develop into independent adults who can engage in an active, constructive role within the community.

Our organisation consists of a semi-government special school for full-time and part-time students, a vocational training centre and a hostel. We enrol children from age 3 with any disability or learning difficulty. This includes but is not limited to:

Intellectual disability
Developmental delays
Physical disabilities
Behavioural disorders
Speech-language disorders
Autism/PDD (Pervasive Developmental Disorders)
Down syndrome
Attention deficit disorders
We teach literacy, numeracy, health & hygiene, music & dance, social skills, self-help skills, hand-eye coordination, handicrafts and cooking. We also provide speech therapy, physiotherapy, vocational training, computer education/training, home-making skills training & community integration programs.

Challenges we face

We currently have 24 children wait-listed to join Ape Lamai. As an organisation which relies on the generosity of donors, we are limited in our ability to take on new applications. Your regular donation can help us ensure that these vulnerable children don’t miss out. Here are some things that your donation can help us with:

Creating a separate area for vocational training
Creating separate classrooms – our classrooms are currently being used for vocational training
Building new hostel rooms/accommodation for new applicants
Employing a hostel warden – the school does not currently employ a hostel warden due to lack of funding; the school principal and staff currently take turns supervising the hostel
Purchasing specialised sports equipment – these can be used to reduce anxiety for the children and encourage them to engage in new activities
